it’s not just a pipe dream. The Seasteading Institute, a think-tank out of California, is working on developing sustainable cities on the world’s oceans.

The nonprofit company believe these “seasteads,” or independent, floating cities, are the key to creating havens of societal happiness — a way to experiment with innovative governments and promote free thinking.

The idea is especially appealing among libertarians, including PayPal Founder Peter Thiel, who has donated millions to the project.

Seasteading presdient Michael Keenan predicts the floating societies could be fully functional within just a few decades.
